The “CancerInfo” Information and Support Center for Cancer Patients was established on May 7, 2004, in Novi Sad, Serbia, by the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization and the Institute of Oncology in Sremska Kamenica, and is the first institution of its kind in the country.

It was conceived as a response to the urgent need for providing information on cancer issues and emotional support for cancer patients, their families and friends, as there is no such service available at cancer centers and hospitals in Vojvodina (Serbia). Its goals also include public education through printing and distribution of booklets/leaflets on cancer prevention and early detection. The Center is designed to be a volunteer-based self-supporting service center that provides help to its users free of charge.

“CancerInfo” was established as a joint action of the Ecumenical Humanitarian Organization in Novi Sad and the Institute of Oncology in Sremska Kamenica as part of the fight against cancer in Vojvodina (the northern province of Serbia, home to approximately 2 million people).

In December 2004 a Memorandum of understanding and collaboration was signed by the heads of the two institutions.

Most «Cancer Info » activities are carried out by volunteers who are specially trained by the foremost oncologists at the Institute of Oncology in Sremska Kamenica.

These volunteers are available to provide help to users every work day from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the summer, and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the winter. Upon special request, the assistant coordinator can provide information for users during the morning hours.

The fact that all « Cancer Info » services are free of charge for users and that the Center is financially self-supporting means that it relies heavily on the community for donations, which are always gratefully accepted. In addition to these donations, support also comes from fundraising activities organized year-round to provide funds for sustaining existing programs and expanding the activities of the Center.
